Relief of Change

Silence slips away
at the dawn of day
as people move
to get into the groove
of their day to day lives

Each day is busy
and comes with a struggle
but we must submit
and sign the treaty

With the night
ends the toil
to be continued
in peace
tomorrow

Slam Poetry

Scratch and Dent Dreams expressed by Eric Darby is about the hope of tomorrow and today. When something frustrates you, don't give up, just take a break. There is no wrong way to fix something because it'll always be better than when it was broken.

Legends and Stories

1. Write a paragraph that discusses the themes of survival and sacrifice in The Forsaken. (6 marks)

The Forsaken is a lonely poem, based on tradition, care, and acceptance. A woman took a piece of herself to use as bait to save her son, and yet at the end of the poem, he leaves her to die. However, this is an accepted idea. In the culture of the Chippewa, it is well known that once one outlives their usefulness that they would be left behind to die in God's hands. Survival is a necessity to the young, however sacrifice is a known action to be taken for the older or unable.

2. Write a paragraph that explains the harsh irony of The Ice-Floes. (6 marks)

In The Ice-Floes there was a harsh irony that evolved throughout the poem. The world was taking its revenge on the men from killing the seals. They took more than their fair share of the precious animals. For a reason so vain that their own men were slaughtered. Karma is harsh, yet punishment is at times necessary. An eye for and eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. It was ironic that the men that were to slaughter, were the ones slaughtered.

3. Write a paragraph that describes Birney’s technique of foreshadowing in the poem David. (6 marks)

In the Poem David by Earle Birney a very subtle foreshadowing was used of a story and a simple lesson. "I caught it to tame but David took it and killed, and said, "Could you teach it to fly?" This statement showed two different views on the matter. Bob had the idea that life was important no matter what the state of living; however David understood that there is a time where living becomes pointless and helpless. This experience foreshadowed the event of Davids death and helped the reader understand the outcome and the contradiction in the event.

4.  Embed a video that features information about one of these poets or poems.  (2 marks)
